speeding up a line follower
Hello Guys,
First of all i am very thankful to the whole community of this site, who are actively participating in discussing & solving various kinds of problems related to Robotics.. I am also very thankful to the owners of this site .
Now what i really wanna know is:
I have made line follower robot with its successful working by my own (by very similar methodologies as given in this site).Till now what components i hav used are : two gear motors(100 rpm each), roller caster, aluminium chassis, 12 v dc, & other Ics.i found the speed of my bot a little bit slow as compared to other flashing bots (like bots competed in IIt Robotics events). I Want my bot just like as it is running on very normal lineless surface . So dat it couldn't be identified that it is sensing some sort of line again N again and walking like a dog of dog Squad (smelling something very slowly n walking).
Kindly suggest me possible changes for amaging speed & load carrying capacity(even at high speed) to which i can experiment with & can prove successful.
Thanxxx...

Hello Jaiswal_ashish
First of all congratulations !
Your result is obvious and its really good to hear that you want to improve you robot's speed. To increase the speed we need a good control system. There are two possible ways improve
1. To have 8 IR sensor pair and apply PID control
2. To have 2 IR sensor pair with ADC analog to digital converter and apply PID control
There is already a discussion on PID ..hope it helps..
And please do post videos and pics of your robot, let other newbies know about it..

Keep posting..
Hi Jaiswal_ashish,
Thank you.
Congratulations for successfully building your own line follower! Why don't you take part in Online Robotics Competition on this website? All you have to do is submit a tutorial on the robot you have built along with its pics and videos. Check out this link for more details - http://www.botskool.com/forum/robotics/robotics-contest/contest-1. It will help others also.
Now coming back to your query of increasing speed of your line follower what you can do is use a different motor of a higher RPM. Also your robot should be as small as possible in size and its chassis should be as close to ground as possible so that the centre of gravity is low and hence it will give you better grip and traction so that bOt can navigate properly at higher speeds. For increasing load carrying capacity the torque of your bOt should be high. These two things RPM and torque of a motor are inversely related, so you have got to strike a balance which is most favourable for you. What is the current RPM of your motors?
And yes I just now saw aamiraarfi's post. He is absolutely correct. By implementing PID logic(along with ADC) your bOt will be able to navigate with a higher degree of accuracy and hence you will be able to increase your speed without comprising on robot's line following capability.
